Wipro launches Earthian IV

The Bangalore-based infotech software development major Wipro Ltd launched Earthian 2014, a global initiative for sustainability education programmes in schools and colleges in Bangalore on August 19. Now in its fourth year, the programme connects different disciplines in education to ecological and social sustainability. This year the umbrella theme is ‘Water in Our School’.

The programme is divided into three activities aimed at building skills, attitudes and values to shape a sustainable future. Winning schools and colleges will be invited to partner with a three-year Continuous Engagement Program (CEP). The objective of CEP is to engage with Earthian awardees over a long period, and help integrate sustainability issues into curriculums in a holistic way with the cooperation of institutions, teachers and students.

“Every year, Earthian brings more institutions, teachers and students onto a platform which fosters rich understanding of how sustainability can be a powerful influence on our thoughts and actions in the future. In the process, we have built a vibrant community of participants who not only share their learning and experiences but also act as ambassadors for Earthian,” says Anurag Behar, chief sustainability officer at Wipro Ltd.

Hello, Seekho launched

Vaasvi Goyal and Kasturi Shah, Indian students of Princeton University, USA, launched ‘Hello, Seekho’ — an audio learning tool for Indian students which provides free-of-charge audio learning solutions through mobile phones to supplement school education – last month (August).

Hello, Seekho provides free education over mobile phones via phone calls and text messages. A vast selection of short pre-recorded audio clips is available on a toll free number which learners countrywide can call free-of-charge, making it accessible to students of all income levels. Hello, Seekho is primarily designed to provide educational support to students in government schools, to help them improve learning outcomes. “It supplements the education of first generation learners and children forced out of school,” says co-founder Kasturi Shah.

Hello, Seekho’s comprehensive curriculum has been created by teachers and students, and vetted by education consultants. While the curriculum draws concepts from textbooks prescribed for government schools, the app’s content is child-centric. “We use stories, conversation, songs and poems to ensure that listeners love and retain our content. To cater to students in various stages of learning, our curriculum is divided into three different levels,” explains Goyal.
