Maharashtra’s private schools may get their own boards

In a radical move to grant more academic autonomy to schools, the state education department in Maharashtra is considering allowing a group or chain of schools to have a board of their own.

School education minister Vinod Tawde said on Friday: "There are organisations that have 100 schools or more. We are thinking if we could allow these private school chains to be allowed to set up their own board with curricula they think best suits their students."

The challenge for the government will also include bringing private board students on par with others for college admissions. "Students from the state, ICSE and CBSE boards have their marks normalized when applying for college admissions. We will have to find a way to put students of the new boards on the same level," said Tawde.

While the government is yet to check the feasibility with educationists, debates have already started raging in the academic circles on the proposed reform.
