India’s Best Boys Day Schools

For the fourth consecutive year, the sample respondents polled by C fore in western India have voted Campion School, Mumbai India’s #1 boys day school followed by St. Xavier’s Collegiate, Kolkata and St. John’s High, Chandigarh

Dislodging the Campion School, Mumbai (estb.1943) from its premier position in the EW national boys day schools league table is likely to take some doing. For the fourth consecutive year, sample respondents polled by Delhi-based market research company C fore in western India have voted Campion School, Mumbai led by its quiet and unassuming principal Paul Machado, India’s #1 boys day school. Top-rated on eight of the 14 parameters of education excellence in this category (including leadership), this CISCE (Delhi)-affiliated all-boys day school has 770 students mentored by 42 teachers on its muster rolls.

“The credit for Campion’s consistently high ranking should accrue to the management, teachers, students and parents of the school. Our top rating for academic reputation, co-curricular education, life skills and sports education indicate that our focus on all-round growth of students and developing them into 21st-century citizens is being appreciated by the discerning public. In Campion we are constantly upgrading curriculums and pedagogies to keep abreast with the emerging challenges of the 21st century,” says Machado, a political science and education alum of Bangalore University who acquired valuable teaching and admin experience at St. Mary’s, Mt. Abu and St. Mary’s, Mazgaon (Mumbai) — all-boys schools — before taking charge as principal of Campion in 2003.

The seating arrangement at the high end of the boys day schools Top 10 table is the same as in 2015, with St. Xavier’s Collegiate School, Kolkata ranked #2 nationally and #1 in West Bengal, followed by St. John’s High, Chandigarh at #3 and La Martiniere for Boys, Kolkata at #4. However, this year the #5 position at top table has been awarded to the vintage Bishop’s School, Pune (estb.1864), ranked a notch below in 2015.

Fr. B. Thomas, SJ, principal and secretary of St. Xavier’s Collegiate (estb.1860), is “happy” that this 156-year-old school which has 2,350 students and 94 teachers on its musters, has been second ranked for three years in a row. “We are humbled by the recognition and thank EducationWorld and your survey respondents for this honour. The excellent public reputation we have earned is the outcome of the continuous encouragement and motivation given by our teachers to students to excel, not only in academics but also in extra-curricular and sports education. I’m happy this focus on holistic education is reflected in your league table,” says Thomas.

Further down the Top 10 table, St. Mary’s School ICSE, Mazgaon, Mumbai is ranked #6 (against #8 in 2015), DAV Boys Senior Secondary School, Gopalapuram (Chennai) #7 (5), Don Bosco High School, Matunga, Mumbai #8 (10) and St. Columba’s School, Delhi also ranked #8 (9), Bishop Cotton Boys, Bangalore #9 (11), Don Bosco, Park Circus, Kolkata #9 (12) and La Martiniere Boys College, Lucknow #10 (13).

“This year’s higher #8 national ranking and #3 in Mumbai is a proud milestone for Don Bosco, Matunga. Our compliments to EducationWorld for educating the public about the importance of holistic education. The survey’s 14 parameters of education excellence go well beyond academics. I believe our focus on holistic education and vigorous sports education programmes have helped us rise in this year’s league table,” says Fr. Bernard Fernandes, principal of the Maharashtra state board-affiliated school (estb.1928) which boasts Union minister for power, coal, new and renewable energy Piyush Goyal, former cricket stars Ravi Shastri and Faroukh Engineer, and Bollywood actors Shashi Kapoor and Akshay Kumar among its alumni.

With the great majority of new K-12 institutions promoted as co-educational schools, the 45-strong EW Boys Day Schools Rankings 2016 is dominated by missionary institutions promoted in an earlier era. They include St. Joseph’s Boys High School, Bangalore (estb.1858) at #13, Calcutta Boys School (1877) #16, Don Bosco, Panjim (1947) #18, St. Vincent’s School, Pune (1867) #20, St. Edmund’s School, Shillong (1916) #25, Baldwin Boys, Bangalore (1880) #27 and St. James School, Kolkata (1864) #31.
