Ranked #14 last year in the composite league table of day schools, Campion School, Mumbai is India’s top-ranked all-boys school in the EducationWorld India School Rankings 2013 followed by the low-profile St. John’s High, Chandigarh which has been ranked above several nationally reputed vintage schools — La Martiniere for Boys, Kolkata; DAV Boys Senior Secondary, Chennai; St. Xavier’s Collegiate School, Kolkata; Mount St. Mary’s, Delhi Cantt; Bishop Cotton Boys, Bangalore; Don Bosco, Matunga (Mumbai); La Martiniere Boys College, Lucknow and St. Joseph’s Boys High, Bangalore — ranked the Top 10 all-boys schools countrywide in that order. Unsurprisingly, Paul Machado, a political science and education alum of Bangalore University who acquired valuable teaching and admin experience at St. Mary’s, Mt. Abu and St. Mary’s, Mazgaon (Mumbai) — both all-boys schools — and principal of Campion since 2003, supports the subdivision of day schools into more rational categ-ories. “The challenges of administering boys, girls and co-ed and day-cum-boarding schools are substantially different. Therefore it makes sense to assess them separately. Moreover, smaller league tables permit higher ranking for all schools and provide visibility and encouragement to schools which get lost in lengthy composite lists. Therefore I’m very pleased that Campion has been ranked India’s, Maharashtra’s and Mumbai’s #1 boys school. In particular I am very pleased that we have been ranked #1 on the parameters of competence and commi-tment of faculty and sports education to which we accord great emphasis,” says Machado. Affiliated with the Delhi-based CISCE examinations board, Campion School (estb. 1943) has an aggregate enrolment of 770 boys mentored by 49 teachers.
Critics of EducationWorld-C fore’s new rating and ranking methodology seem to be in a minority. Most principals interviewed for this narrative expressed preference for ranking all-boys, all-girls, co-ed and day-cum-boarding schools separately. “Rating and ranking schools of differing character and composition with each other is a good idea. The challenges and responsibilities of principals and teachers of boys schools are completely different. For a long time St. Edwards has been Himachal Pradesh and Shimla’s most preferred day school with an excellent reputation for acad-emics, faculty competence and life skills education. But our visibility outside Shimla has been low because of Shimla’s well-known boarding schools. Subdi-vision has improved our national visibility and highlighted our true capabilities,” says Rev. John Bosco, a public administration and divinity alumnus of Bombay University who taught at the Sophia Convent, Kalka (Haryana) and St. Luke School, Solan, prior to being appointed principal of St. Edwards School, Shimla (estb. 1925) in 2005. Currently the CBSE-affiliated St. Edwards has 1,942 boys mentored by 62 teachers on its muster rolls.
