Biotech solutions provider

A biotechnology postgraduate of Shivaji University, Kolhapur (Maharashtra) and recipient of the prestigious National Associate Fellowship of the department of biotechnology, Bhaba Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, Dr. Neetin Desai is professor and dean, faculty of science and technology at the Padmashree Dr. D.Y. Patil University, Navi Mumbai.

Newspeg. Currently Desai is actively involved in developing low cost biotechnology solutions in the fields of health sciences, nutraceuticals, and environmental management. Among his achievements are DNA-barcoding of medicinal plants of the Western Ghats, and development of the biotech and bio-informatics undergrad curriculums of Shivaji and D.Y. Patil universities. In an academic career spanning two decades, Desai has received training in stem cells and regenerative medicine in South Korea and has played a major role in establishing Asia’s first H-class facility for commercial processing of stem cells for autologous cell therapy in non-union bone fracture. Moreover in association with Shreeji Biotech, Mumbai and Angel Marketing, he has developed nutraceutical products which have revolutionised agricultural practices.

History. Born into a socio-economically disadvantaged farmer’s family in a remote village (Talewadi) in Kolhapur district, Desai had to struggle to acquire his basic education. However despite his father suffering a major road accident in 1987, against all odds, he completed his education graduating from Shivaji University and pressing on to be awarded his Ph D in cytogenetics by Shivaji University in 1999.

Direct speech. “Students should use their powers of analysis to delve deep into the mysteries of nature. As a teacher I insist that my students learn subjects of their interest out of passion, rather than for excelling in examinations. There are many opportunities waiting for  young, dynamic learners and I always encourage my students to provide technology solutions to bottom-of-the-pyramid population. That’s the key to attaining economies of scale and business prosperity,” says Desai.

Future plans. Now a senior faculty member of one of the nation’s fastest growing education conglomerates, Desai has plans to spread biotech education and technology solutions to the remotest villages of Maharashtra. “We are working towards this goal by encouraging school children to develop an interest in biotechnology besides being actively engaged in transforming all of rural Maharashtra into eco-villages under a state government programme,” says Desai.
