Overview
Vivekananda Mission School (VMS) at Joka, Kolkata, is a co-educational day school founded in 1978 by C. G. Chandra, an educationist and social worker. It started with 300 students in a rented house and now boasts 3500 students between nursery and class XII. It is affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE), New Delhi.
Campus
The school is built on a spacious campus with a library featuring 15,000 books, numerous journals, magazines and a vast resource of educational CDs, video cassettes and DVDs, spacious and well lit classrooms and well-equipped laboratories. There is a playhouse for kindergarten students, a swimming pool, sand bed, see-saw and swing.
Academics
Vivekananda Mission School encourages its students to achieve a high level of competence in all the branches of learning that they engage in. The school follows a system of continuous assessment (CCE) on a day-to-day basis. The school helps students explore subject-related topics through research, projects and other ways. Subject-based training programmes and workshops are held for students, teachers and parents.
Extracurricular:
Besides academics, the school encourages its students to participate in cultural and educational programmes. Students participate in elocution, debate, music, dance and essay-writing, and take part in inter-school competitions and Science, Maths and English Olympiads. They also learn cricket, chess, shot put, kho-kho, badminton, athletics and other sports.
