Overview

The Valley School, established in 1978, is one of the five schools of the Krishnamurti Foundation India. The Valley School is based on the teachings of the eminent philosopher and a great thinker of our times, Jiddu Krishnamurti. It is located in a 120 acres campus to the south of Bangalore, in a picturesque valley with undulating hills and farms and with a reserve forest on the fringe. The Valley School is a coeducational, English medium day-school affiliated to CISCE (Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations), New Delhi. The school has been successful in implementing an ‘Open Classroom' where vertical groups of children from class I to IV can learn together. The open classroom not only allows for a variety of foundational skills to be explored but also provides the opportunity for students to direct their own learning.

It has a student strength of about 365 and teacher strength of about 60.  The school believes that the learning can take place, if one can avoid the division of school activities as academic non- academic, and separate them from day to day living. It also believes that grouping children based on classes and grades and expecting all of them to learn at the same level and pace is inappropriate.

Campus

The school is set on a 120-acre campus with a lake and two artificial ponds, dams, three ancient banyan trees and lightly wooded rolling hills. Academic buildings are concentrated around the main school in the eastern section of the campus; the student dormitories, residential quarters, guesthouses and “Art Village” is located on the western side. The school is divided into three divisions- junior school- classes’ I-IV, middle school- classes V- VII, and senior school- classes VIII-XII.

A ‘Resource Room' has been created to cater to the special learning needs of children. Professionals in the area work with children one-on-one and also offer remedial inputs in various areas.

It provides spacious, well-equipped laboratories for life sciences, physics, chemistry and home science, and a state-of-the-art computer facility for students and staff.

The centre has a seminar hall with the latest audio-visual equipment. The science centre houses state of the art facilities and laboratories forphysics, biology, chemistry, computers and Home Science.

In addition there is a well equipped seminar hall, with a capacity of 100 persons, which is used for lectures, presentations, exhibitions and seminars by students, faculty and visitors.

The library houses over 16000 titles that, besides school subjects, cover a wide range of subjects including education, philosophy and literature.  Sports and games facilities includes a football field, 3 basket ball courts, kho-kho field, volleyball court, a table tennis room with three tables  and an indoor space for yoga, aerobics etc. Most students commute to school by bus. The school buses operate on routes in the city, picking up and dropping students off at various points. Boarding is optional and is available for classes VIII and higher. Student hostels are located on campus.

Accomodation

There are separate hostels for the boys and girls. Each can accommodate 12 students and a house parent living with them. Presently boarding facilities are available for out station students who enroll into the ISC program (class XI and XII).

Academics

The lower school is run based on Jiddu Krishnamurti's philosophies, where teachers and students are given freedom and flexibility. Along with a standard curriculum of science and humanities, extra-curricular activities are encouraged and tests and examinations are kept to a minimum.

Higher classes follow a standard ICSE curriculum, where they appear for a nationwide public board examination at the end of class X. Class XII students appear for the ISC examinations conducted by the same board.

After a lot of conscious thinking and effort, the school has evolved the mixed age group learning program for children up the age of 12. Children are grouped in to three learning levels:

I Entry level group - Up to age of 6 years. The group is further  divided in to three sub groups - `Koels’, `Bulbuls’ and `Mynahs’ )

II Junior School - Ages 7, 8, 9years, they are further divided in to six groups - `Bhuvi’, `Ila’, `Mahi’, `Medhini’, `Oorja’ and `Prithvi’)

III Middle School - Ages 10, 11, 12 years. The students are divided in to four groups –`Fly catchers’, `Robins’,`Sunbirds’ and `woodpeckers’ ).

The school admits about 40 students for the ISC program each year.

Extracurricular

Students are coached in major field games like basketball and football, as well as volleyball, kho-kho and table tennis.  The games activities include regular physical fitness exercises as well as matches.  The annual athletics meet provides a focus for the development of athletic prowess and talent.

Admission

Application forms for admission to Class I for the session 2013-14 will be made available after July 15, 2012.

Fees

Approx. Rs. 1.35Lakh annually for day boarders. Hostel is available for class XI and XII and the fee is Rs 85000.

Achievements

The school believes that the learning can take place, if one can avoid the division of school activities as academic non- academic, and separate them from day to day living. It also believes that grouping children based on classes and grades and expecting all of them to learn at the same level and pace is inappropriate.
