Overview
The Lawrence School, Lovedale is one of the premier residential public schools in the country. It is an autonomous institution run under the aegis of The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. Lovedale is situated about 6 kilometres from Ootacamund and its climate is temperate throughout the year. The school stands on its own estate of about 750 acres, and the local railway station, Lovedale, which is on the Ootacamund-Mettupalayam metre gauge hill railway, adjoins the school estate.
Being one of the elite institutions in the country it takes pride in its 150 year old history and tradition. The school has been ranked at No 15 position in the EW C-fore India School Rankings 2012.
Campus
The school boasts a sprawling campus of over 700 acres, which is divided into prep school (classes four to six), junior school (classes seven and eight) and senior school (classes nine to twelve). The classrooms and dormitories of the different schools are housed in their respective buildings. The girls are housed in the girl's school and are required to go to the respective schools for classes. The school also has its own modern hospital which is governed by the resident medical officer and trained staff.
The campus is well equipped with the modern infrastructural facilities such as spacious ventilated class rooms with the latest teaching aids, rich library, state-of-the-art computer labs, science labs and play ground.
Accomodation
The 4 residential houses are Aravali, Nilgiri, Sumeru and Vindhya. The students of each house live, eat and study together.
Academics
The school is affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The students at the +2 level can specialize in commerce, humanities or the sciences.
Extracurricular: The school encourages the students to take part in various co-curricular activities held in school such as music, dance, arts and sports. Cricket, hockey, football and athletics are the main sports which have excellent facilities at the school. Apart from these, the students take active interest in horse riding, swimming, volleyball, basketball, tennis, table tennis and badminton.
Admission
The prospective parents or guardians should first register the name of the child with the year and class to which admission is sought. Children are admitted to Lawrence in April each year. Most children are admitted between the ages of eight and nine years. Class IV is preferred as the entry point. However, the admission to other classes is subject to available vacancies.
Admission is based on an entrance examination, held the preceding November, all over India and abroad. All children, except those of the school staff, are expected to stay in the boarding houses. The application form duly filled together with the required registration fee (Rs.5,000/-. for online application the registration fee is Rs.5,500/-) should be sent to the headmaster as early as possible. In the case of admission to class XI, a copy of the pre-board examination marks sheet / current year progress card should also be attached.
Students are required to write an entrance examination and admissions are based strictly on the performance of the student in the exam. The entrance examination for Class IV will comprises of mathematics and English of one hour duration each. For classes V to IX, the examination comprises of mathematics, English and general science of one hour duration each. The question papers will be strictly according to the C.B.S.E. syllabus of the previous class. Prior to admission, the school management may interview the child along with parent(s).
Fees: approx 3-4 lakh per annum.
