Overview
Thapar University, formerly Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology was founded in 1956 by Karam Chand Thapar of the Thapar Group of Companies. The institute was granted the status of a Deemed University in 1985 by the University Grants Commission (UGC). It is one of north India’s premier institutes of engineering and technology. It is the first college in Punjab that started admitting students exclusively through the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). Thapar University offers a host of undergraduate, postgraduate and Phd courses in several disciplines of engineering and technology. The faculty student ratio of this institute is 1:33.
Thapar University was ranked No.26 in Outlook India’s survey of top engineering colleges of India in 2012 and No.19 in Dataquest India’s survey of top engineering colleges of 2011.
The institute has a dedicated training and placement cell which facilitates summer training, soft skills training, educational tours, industrial visits, career guidance and placement assistance to the students.
Campus
The institute is located in a sprawling campus of 250 acres in the historic city of Patiala. The nearest domestic and international airports are at Chandigarh and New Delhi respectively. The college hosts spacious and airy lecture halls equipped with the latest teaching aids within aesthetically constructed buildings.
Besides a well stocked conventional library, students can refer and collect information from the online and CD-ROM based electronic information resources in the e-library. Other facilities include wi-fi enabled lecture halls, internet café, hostels and sports zone.
Accomodation
The institute offers six boys hostels and three girls hostels with state-of-the-art facilities. Each hostel has a gym, a reading room and common room.

Admission
Admissions are made on the basis of merit in prescribed entrance test for respective programmes. For admissions to the B.Tech./B.E. programme students are required to have physics and mathematics as two of the main subjects at the senior secondary level and should have qualified in the AIEEE. Admissions to the M.E./M.Tech. programmes are based on valid GATE scores in the respective disciplines.
Fees
For postgraduate students annual fee is Rs. 92,000. Annual hostel charges are Rs. 22,000 for shared room and Rs. 28,000 for single room.
