Overview
Sprouts Montessori House of Children, Mylapore, Chennai was founded by Smita Vishweshwar in March 2003 with five children as an after school activity. The centre was eventually upgraded to a regular school that emphasises exclusively on the core principles of Montessori approach of education in June 2004.
The school is accredited and registered with the Indian Montessori Centre and caters to children between 1.5 to 12 years of age in mixed-age classrooms. The school presently has 140 students.
Campus
The school hosts well ventilated classrooms where children work on the Montessori material taken from the low shelves lining the rooms. The children use mats on the floor while working on the Montessori material. The school also hosts an outdoor play area with play equipment and jungle gym for informal play, formal sports and games.
Academics
The school follows the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori but its curriculum is adapted to meet the particular needs of children attending traditional schools. The outstanding toddler, primary and elementary programs include exposure to various forms of art, clay modeling, rhythm and movement, drama and storytelling, excursions and celebrations. The curriculum also includes a multipronged approach to math and language instruction using Montessori materials along with CBSE guidelines. Tamil and Hindi languages are given equal importance.
The school conducts field trips/excursions to zoo, botanical garden etc every term to provide practical exposure to the children. All festivals and events are celebrated to educate children about the relevance of the festivals.
Admission
Admissions are based on vacancy and parental acceptance and agreement with the school’s philosophy. Parents are required to share any special/health needs of their child.
Programs offered:
Toddler Montessori: for 1.5 years to 3 years
Primary Montessori: 3 years to 5.5 years (corresponding to Pre KG, LKG and UKG)
Lower Elementary – 5.5 years to 9 years (corresponding to class I, II and III)
Upper Elementary – 9 years to 12 years (class IV, V and VI)

Achievements
Sprouts Montessori House of Children has an all women team of staff with 16 female teachers and 7 female support staff. The school is an inclusive centre that also admits children with special needs and provides free education or subsidises fees for children from lower economic backgrounds whose parents are passionate about sending their children to Sprouts Montessori.
