Overview
Sherwood College is a co-educational residential school in Nainital and was founded in the year 1869 as the brain child of Dr. Condon, Mr. H.S. Reid and others and under the patronage of the Rt. Rev. Robert Milman. Formerly known as the Diocesan Boys School, it was located at the Sherwood estate in the government house ground. It was shifted to its present site in 1897.
The school boasts of a large, sprawling campus located on the Ayarpata hill that border the Nainital Lake.
Campus
The well equipped library provides a large collection of books touching almost every subject that a student and even an amateur researcher may find useful. The library subscribes to the latest magazines and journals. The school also boasts of a fine computer laboratory with a separate internet laboratory that has a VSAT link from the computer department of the school.
The art block houses the Indian music as well as the Western music department on the ground floor and the school has its own band There is a photography club for the photo enthusiasts and for the great writers of tomorrow there is a Hindi literary society as well as an English literary society. The school also has dramatics societies. On basis of their evaluation in co-curricular activities, the Houses are awarded the Co-Curricular Activities Cup at the Founders Prize distribution ceremony.
Accomodation
The school is divided into two parts - Dixon Wing (Class VI -XII) and Horsman Wing (classes III-V). There are separate dormitories for the students of both Dixon wing and Horsman Wing. The girls' dormitories are located with the new teacher's residences, a little away from the main campus.
Academics
The school is affiliated to CISCE, Delhi and conducts the ICSE and ISE examinations. The school switched over to the 10+2 pattern under the Indian School Certificate in 1975, when the first batch appeared for the ICSE (class X) examination. The first batch of ISC (class-XII) appeared for the board examination in March 1978. Two recent innovations have been the introduction of a computer literacy program for all students in classes VI to XII and the introduction of co-education at the plus-2 stage.
Extra curricular activities are given much importance. Sports facilities include excellent facilities for soccer, cricket, football, hockey, badminton, boxing and athletics. Billiards is also taught and facilities available. Swimming pool and a shooting range helps to promote swimming and shooting as a sport.
Hobby clubs include fine arts, dramatics, music, Hindi and English literary societies. The students of classes III-V have regular art and craft lessons in their daily schedule.
Admission
The Sherwood College does not accept students as day-scholars. Students should not be less than 8 years for class III and the age of 13 years for the class VI on 05 March of the year they join. Admissions are made to class III and VI only.
The candidate must be registered according to the procedure required by the school and a registration fee needs to be paid. Eligibility for admission depends on the student attaining a minimum standard in the admission test. Admission is granted at the sole discretion of the Principal. The students name may be registered upto three years in advance of the year in which admission is desired. The college does not normally admit students beyond class VIII. However students in class XI are admitted subject to the availability of seats and the applicants meeting the admission criteria of the course applied for at the +2 stage. The academic year is divided into two terms from March to the end of July and August to the end of November.
