Overview
The Sainik School, Jamnagar, is situated in Balachadi estate, 30 kilometers from Jamnagar. It is an English medium residential school for boys established in 1961. The school provides public school education with basic military training up to class XII, as per the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) syllabus.
The 300 acre campus of the school includes the old campsite for Polish refugee children of World War II, built by K. S. Digvijaysinhji (‘Jam Saheb), Maharaja of Nawanagar in 1942.
Campus
The campus houses well lit, spacious classrooms equipped with the latest audio-visual aids, LCD projectors, educational CDs, etc., a well-stocked library featuring more than 7,000 books in English, Hindi & Gujarati, state-of-the-art science and computer laboratories.
The school campus facilitates outdoor and indoor games and houses a sports field, a parade ground and an athletic ground.
Accomodation
The hostel comprises eight houses, each accommodating approximately 72 cadets under the supervision of house masters, matrons and house-tutors.
Medical facilities include a full time doctor assisted by an experienced compounder / nurse, ward boys and a well-equipped hospital and dental clinic.
Well balanced vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, prepared under hygienic conditions, is provided in the school mess.
Academics
The school curriculum is designed to prepare students for the class X and class XII examinations conducted by the CBSE, New Delhi under the 10+2 pattern of school education and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Examination, for admission to the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Defence Forces.
All scholarship holders are required to take the NDA entrance examination conducted by the UPSC after passing class XI. Since there is an emphasis on science disciplines in the NDA curriculum, the school offers only science stream in classes XI and XII. The school follows a system of continuous evaluation and students are assessed on the basis of their regular performance in scholastic and non-scholastic activities. From class VI onwards the students have terminal and final examinations apart from the weekly and surprise tests.
Extracurricular:
Besides academic advancement, the students are encouraged to develop their creative faculties through co-curricular activities and Socially Useful Productive Work (SUPW). They are also introduced systematically to all major sports and games along with NCC training. Each class undertakes field trips/ picnics/ excursions, as per the requirements of the curriculum.
Regular training is imparted in games and sports like hockey, football, basketball, volleyball, cross country and athletics. Personnel from Army Physical Training Corps and Coaches from Sports Authority of India train the cadets in various games and sports. All games are supervised by a well qualified physical education instructor, house masters and hostel superintendents.
Admission
The school prospectus is available in Gujarati and English (bilingual) on payment of crossed bank draft in favor of Principal Sainik School Balachadi. Sale of prospectus cum application starts in the month of October. For admission to class VI, boys should be aged between 10 and 11 years as on 01 July of the year of admission and must be either studying in or passed class V. For admission to class IX, boys should be aged between 13 to 14 years as on 01 July that year and must be either studying in or passed class VIII.
Admission process comprises a written exam, a medical exam and a personal interview. Candidates who qualify in the written exam are called for medical test/personal interview.
Examination is conducted in the month of Jan/Feb and the centers for the examination are Balachadi and Ahmedabad. The question papers for class IX are set in English although the answers can be written in any of the recognized languages. Question papers for class VI are set in English, Hindi, Gujarati and recognized regional official languages.
