Mayo College, Ajmer is routinely included in all league tables of India’s top boarding schools. This vintage institution is highly regarded for its superb architecture, infrastructure and globally benchmarked education. It was promoted in 1870 to provide British-style public school education to the progeny of pre-independence India’s princes. This Ajmer (Rajasthan)-based all-boys Mayo College has made a smooth transition into a class IV-XII legacy boarding school.


The distinguishing characteristic of Mayo is that it provides a well-balanced education experience combining academic rigor with “globally unparalleled co-curricular and sports facilities” to its students. The institutional objective of the school is to develop the self-confidence and leadership qualities of its students. This wholly boys’ residential school is organized into junior school (classes IV-VI) and senior school (classes VII-XII) and is notable for its extensive sports and field games facilities and splendid architecture.


The school is an active member of the Round Square International Conference and has a vibrant student exchange program with schools in several countries including Germany, France, USA, Australia and the Middle East.


Mayo offers the students in its fold a unique opportunity to develop both mind and the body through a structured educational and distinctive co-curricular program. Being a boarding school with a handful of day scholars, the campus is self sufficient and has the facilities and the opportunities for each student to excel in various spheres. Spread over 300 acres, the school has fully-wired classrooms served by 85 highly-qualified teachers. The school has two libraries, one each for junior and senior school with the latter equipped with 42,000 volumes, 48 journal subscriptions and 300 multimedia learning aids. Moreover, the school’s museum which showcases priceless antiques and an armoury section, is regarded as one of the best school museums worldwide.


It is a fully residential school with 12 boarding houses and 3 dining halls.


The school is affiliated with the Delhi-based Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the students appear for the All India Secondary School Examination at the end of class X and All India Senior School Certificate Examination at the end of the class XII.


Extra curricular


Mayo College offers extraordinary sports and games facilities. In the midst of an arid region, the Mayo College campus is an oasis of greenery with two full-size cricket grounds; 15 soccer and hockey fields; five squash and 15 tennis courts; two Olympics sized swimming pools; a multi-facility gymnasium; a ten-lane shooting range; two volleyball and five basketball courts; a nine-hole golf course and equestrian facilities serviced with 50 horses housed in on-campus stables.


The boys have 25 societies including western classical music, Indian classical music, carpentry, sculpture, automobile engineering and aero-modeling to choose from.


The lowest class that the school has is class IV, and the child on passing class III, preferably from an English medium school, can take the entrance test. Entrance test for admission to Mayo College is held in the 3rd week of November every year at various centers in India. It can also be arranged overseas through the Indian Embassy in that country. The test comprises of English, Hindi and mathematics to test the age specified skills in mathematics and languages.


The entrance test is held only for admission upto class IX. Admission to class XI is considered on the basis of the board results of class X,  subject to merit and vacancy.


The merit list is drawn on the basis of the marks obtained in the written test, and those qualifying appear for an interview in the months of February and March. Admissions are finalized on the cumulative marks of the written test and the interview. The new entrants join in the month of April.


Overseas candidates may come for the interview after informing the school of their availability for the interview if they are unable to come on the date specified. These wards can join the school in July of the year of entry.




Rs.2.70 lakh in addition to registration fee (Rs.10, 000); admission fee (Rs.50, 000); caution money (Rs.1.35 lakh); imprest fee (Rs.20, 000) and development fee (Rs.11, 000).
