Founded in 1983 by the great visionary Dr. Vishwanath Karad, and run by MAAEER (Maharashtra Academy of Engineering & Education Research), Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Pune, is one of the first private engineering colleges in Maharashtra. It is the flagship institute of the MIT Group of Institutions which runs over 65 engineering, medical, pharmacy, insurance, management, and design institutions as well as schools across the state of Maharashtra catering to 50,000 students.
Like its other sister colleges, MIT, Pune is affiliated with the University of Pune. It is a deemed to be university offering various graduate, postgraduate and doctoral level programmes through its 13 departments – Information Technology, Petroleum Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics and Communication, Applied Mechanics, MBA, Mathematics, Physics, Humanities & Management. All these courses are approved by the Government of Maharashtra and the New Delhi-based All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).
MIT colleges in Pune have a dedicated department for Industry Academia Collaborations that helps students get practical exposure through internships, industrial visits, guest lectures by industry experts, as well as placement in leading organizations. The department has signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN), in collaboration with which, various sessions on entrepreneurship are organized for the students, conducted by successful entrepreneurs
Over 300 multinational companies participate in campus placement every year and more than 80 percent of the students are recruited before they start their final
year of engineering. Some of the top recruiters at MIT, Pune are Accenture, Services Pvt. Ltd, Patni Computer Systems Ltd, ADP Ltd, Amdocs India Development Centre, Tata Communications Ltd, Cap Gemini, MPhasis Ltd., and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.
Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Pune, has state-of-the-art facilities with a friendly study environment, setting modern architecture against a backdrop of natural beauty and a special emphasis on green environment.
The campus hosts a central library apart from the departmental libraries. The central library is built over an area of 738 square metres and houses four separate halls for reference books, circulation, journals, and traditional science respectively, all of which are computerized and connected to each other. A separate digital section is also available. The library features 50,000 books on various subjects offered by the institute, as well as books on arts and humanities. It has subscription to 146 national and international journals, 15 newspapers, 10 magazines, and 2100 CDs. It also offers students access to a number of e-resources.
Other facilities include a spacious and well-equipped canteen, bank, ATM, fully equipped dispensary for medical emergencies, and meditation centre.
The college has its own cricket, football, and volleyball grounds, and twin basketball courts with flood lights. It also has 1500 sq. ft. modern well-equipped gymnasium. Facilities for table tennis, carrom and wrestling are also available.
Three hostels are available for both boys and girls with for a capacity to accommodate 875 students. Canteen, recreational facilities, and medical help is available in the hostel.

Doctorate (Ph. D) level programmes at MIT, Pune, is facilitated through its research centre in the following disciplines:
Besides academic excellence, Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Pune, also encourages a variety of extra-curricular activities for the all-round development of students. It has its very own magazine titled Sourabh, giving expression to student voices. There are different interest-specific societies such as Drishti, the film club, cultural committee, aero-sports group and water sports group, run by students. There is an active NCC (National Cadet Corps – the second line of defence for the country). Students also organise Abhivyakti – an inter-college literary festival with competitions in painting, debate, extempore, movie-making, one act plays in English and Marathi, poetic verse recitation, etc.
Sports such as cricket, volleyball, football, boxing, badminton, chess, table tennis, athletics, basketball, lawn tennis, swimming, baseball, squash, water polo, and rowing are facilitated.
Admission to all courses is based on merit as per the rules and norms laid down by the Director of Technical Education (DTE), Maharashtra State.
For all undergraduate courses, students with 45 per cent marks in English, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in the higher secondary school examination of the Maharashtra State Board or its equivalent (40 percent for scheduled caste/schedule tribes/other backward classes) can apply.
For candidates seeking admission under the state-quota (65 percent seats), the qualifying exam is the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET). Others have to qualify the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the New Delhi-based Central Board of Secondary Education.
Candidates seeking management quota have to compete in either of these entrance tests and apply to the management of the institute separately. For diploma holders passing out of polytechnic approved by the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education or the AICTE, a minimum of 50 percent marks is needed.

The fee structure at MIT is decided by the Government of Maharashtra’s Shikshan Shulka Samiti (Educational Fees Committee). For B.Tech and M.Tech, the annual fee is Rs. 97,630. For MBA programme, the annual fee is Rs. 83,940.
Outlook has ranked MIT Pune as the No.1 engineering college in the state of Maharashtra and 11th in India amongst private engineering colleges.
