Overview
Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT-Bombay, is a senior secondary school housed within the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay campus in Powai. The school was established in 1964 by the founder-principal S. Ramchandran, under the guidance of the director of IIT Bombay, Prof. Devang V Khakhar. Located within the IIT-Bombay campus, it caters to children of IIT staff, as well as outsiders.
The school is a constituent institution of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, which was established to cater to the educational needs of children of transferable Central government employees including defence and para-military personnel. KV-IIT Bombay is a co-educational day school with classes from I to XII. It offers free education to all girl students, and for all students up to class VIII.
Campus
The school is located within the IIT-Bombay campus in Powai, a suburb in northwestern Mumbai. The school is housed within a huge three-storied building with four wings, for the primary, secondary and senior secondary sections. There are science and computer labs offering internet facility, library, and playground. Coaching is provided for several indoor and outdoor games.
Accomodation
Hostel facility is available to students from class VI onwards.
Academics
The school offers education from class I to XII. It is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The senior secondary section (class XI and XII) of the school offers three streams—humanities, science and commerce. The school is reputed for its high levels of academic excellence.
The school has consistently shown good results in the class X and XII board exams.
Extracurricular education
The school offers football, volleyball, basketball, kabaddi, table tennis, squash and badminton. Students can join scouts and guides and participate in several extracurricular activities including drawing, music, dance, debate and elocution.
Admission
Admission forms are available in the school office. Admission process starts in the month of January. A child must be five years old as on April 1 of the year of admission to class I. No admission test would be conducted for admission to class I. From class II onwards, students are required to appear for an admission test in the following subjects—English, Hindi, maths, social studies and general knowledge.
Fees:
Education is free till class VIII. From class IX, annual tuition fees is Rs.3,000-5,000.
