Overview
Excelsior American School was founded with the objective of providing the community with a school that enhances and develops the intellectual, social, ethical and physical aspects of a child's life. Says a school spokesperson: “We pride ourselves in providing high quality academic learning environment, which is at the same time caring and supportive of individual students. It is extremely important that we shouldn't ask what a child needs to know or be able to do in order to fit into the existing social order.”
At Excelsior, which is part of a chain of schools based in Houston, US, the school encourages children how to think rather than what to think and provides academic challenges which encourage them to develop their strengths and talents to the fullest. The school's mission is, “To develop a strong sense of self worth and responsibility among its students that will in turn prepare them for a lifetime of achievement and contribution to society.”
Campus
The school has state of the art infrastructure with fully equipped, well ventilated and spacious classrooms, labs for science subjects and well connected computer labs. Reading is an important aspect at Excelsior and it begins as early as 3 year olds in the form of class libraries.
The school has a well stocked ‘Reading Room ‘for children from class KG onwards to visit and get books issued as per their choice. Books are added at frequent intervals to encourage and imbibe good reading habits amongst the children.
School transportation is available for all grades from pre-nursery to class X. All the buses have air-conditioning facility.
Accomodation
Excelsior American School is a day school, hence hostel facility is not provided.
Academics
The school has obtained accreditation from the University of Cambridge International Examination to offer CIPP, Cambridge International Primary Program and the International General Certificate of Secondary Education [IGCSE].
The Excelsior approach differs from traditional education in several ways; the education imparted is child centered with individualized learning being the key factor. All aspects of the child’s development (physical, emotional, moral, social and intellectual) are given equal importance.
Learning is achieved through direct experience and active involvement; self direction is encouraged. A small sized classroom ensures that every child gets enough attention and guidance.
Excelsior program takes into account that each child develops at his or her own pace. New tasks are introduced at the right moment of readiness and children form a habit of being successful one step at a time, building a firm foundation for continued enthusiasm and lifelong quest of knowledge.
The school also plans to introduce the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at the senior secondary level from the International Baccalaureate Organisation of Geneva and Cardiff (UK).
Extracurricular:
The school offers a wide range of co-curricular activities which includes art, craft, music, dance, sports and hobby clubs. The school aims to equip the children with excellent technological proficiency so that he may function with clarity and efficiency in the modern world and far more important, to create the right environment so that he may develop fully as a complete human being.
Admission
For pre-primary, primary and middle school admissions, interview and assessment is not done. However, the child's previous report card and transcript is required. There is an admission test in general subjects (English, Maths and Science) from grade VIII onwards.
