Overview
Founded in 1971, Dilkhush Special School is the second oldest school in Mumbai for special children with a mental handicap. It was started with 15 students in an old bungalow in Juhuand is managed by the Society of Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Dilkhush Special School works with individuals with different abilities and from diverse backgrounds to continuously explore their capabilities.The aim of the school is to cater to the all round development of children with intellectual challenges.
Campus
The school campus provides alearning environment for the mental, physical, spiritual and emotional growth of every child.
Academics
The school’s curriculum comprising functional academics and co-curricular activities aims to promote the all round development of each child and the development of self-care and social and pre-vocational skills.
Dilkhush Special School’s educational programmes are based on the following principles:
1. Functional Academics:Children learn basic reading, writing and math, and its application to daily living.
2. Self-care skills:It focuses on personal hygiene and grooming.
3. Pre-vocational skills: skills training in art and craft, cooking, needlework and bead-work.
4. Extra-curricular activities involve yoga, music, dance, sport and drama.
5. Independence and social skills
Dilkhush Sheltered Workshop offers adults (including graduates of the school) a sheltered atmosphere to learn skills, explore, develop and channel talents into practical tasks and also provides them a livelihood option.
Admission
The school is open to people from all walks of life, with the only criterion for admission being the appropriate age group (with the minimum age for admission being 5 years) and an IQ level between 35 and 70.
