Overview
Bishop Cottons Boys School, Bangalore is affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). Spread over 13 acres in the heart of Bangalore, the school’s sylvan campus of trees, carefully laid-out gardens, white-washed and stone buildings separated by playgrounds offers excellent academic and sports facilities. The school was promoted on April 19, 1865 by Rev. S.T. Pettigrew, the then Chaplain of Bangalore’s imposing St. Mark’s Cathedral, and was named after Bishop Cotton of Calcutta.
The 147-year-old school boasts several distinguished alumni including the late Field Marshal Cariappa, General Thimayya, Dr. Raja Ramanna (defence research scienrists), Air Marshal King Lee, and Admiral Shekhawat (former chief of the Indian Navy) to name a few.
Campus
The school’s 13 acre campus in the heart of Bangalore offers contemporary academic and sports facilities. The 1,400 seat auditorium is air-conditioned and offers modern acoustics and the latest technology for sound and light effects required for dance, music or theatre. It boasts a cafeteria, restrooms, VIP rooms, green rooms, control cabins, backstage rooms etc.
The Elphick Research Centre is spread over four floors and houses the physics, chemistry, biology and computer science laboratories. The computer lab hosts the latest equipment including a projector. The kindergarten section also has a multi-media room.
The library houses more than 100,000 books with a reference section containing the latest editions. The library can accommodate 100 students at a time. Above the library, is a multi-purpose hall which boarders use for study purposes. Separate canteens for the junior and senior schools are also provided.
The new Sports Complex comprises a five-lane swimming pool and indoor badminton and squash courts. It also has facilities for table tennis, a multipurpose gym, basketball and tennis.
The school supplies all textbooks, notebooks and stationery items before start of the academic year.
Accomodation
The school can accommodate 200 boarders. The well-ventilated and spacious dormitories feature modern amenities such as individual lockers, round-the-clock hot water and large bathrooms.
Academics
Bishop Cottons Boys School, Bangalore is affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) and prepares students to write the ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) and the ISC (Indian School Certificate) examinations at the end of their class X and XII scholastic years.
Extracurricular education:
Inter-class and inter-house competitions are held regularly in dramatics, music, elocution (English, Hindi, and Kannada), quiz, sports, IT-related activities, essay competitions, spelling, art exhibition etc. Swimming classes are conducted during the holidays.
The school conducts several cultural and sports events through the year, and has also appointed qualified coaches for various games and sports training.
Admission
Admission is in the kindergarten section with admission into other classes considered only on availability of seats. The application forms for admissions may be obtained from the office.
Achievements
Students of Bishop Cottons Boys School have won many national and international level competitions such as Model United Nations (MUN's), the Indian Model United Nations (InMUN) and the Harvard Model United Nations (HMUN).
The school has also participated in the Asian Regional Space Settlement Design Competition(ARSSDC) in Delhi since 2008 (2011 winners, 2012 runners up) and the International Space Settlement Design Competition (ISSDC) hosted at the NASA's Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas since 2011 (2012 winners, 2012 runners up).
