Overview
Founded in 1993, Jyoti Sroat School (JSS), Shillong provides opportunities for Children with Special Needs (CWSN) to access learning and schooling along with other children at a larger scale. JSS is a day cum residential school that functions under the vision and mission of Bethany Society.
JSS strives to achieve its vision “Every Child to be an expert learner” through:
- Appropriate scholastic programmes
– Training for independent living
– Opportunities for children capable of other than the prescribed scholastic programmes
– Training of teachers for promoting inclusive education
– Varied and inclusive non-scholastic activities
Campus
JSS campus hosts contemporary infrastructure to nurture the emotional and physical needs and intellectual abilities of Children with Special Needs.
Accomodation
JSS provides residential facility for students.
Academics
JSS offers the following programmes:
JSS offers academic programmes as per Meghalya Board of School Education (MBOSE) requirements with special adaptations for children with special needs.
Training in orientation and mobility and daily life skills for those with impairments so as to enable them to live independently.
JSS provides training opportunities in pre-vocational skills and basic education for children with potentials for the same and inadequate abilities for academics.
JSS imparts teacher training in special education for the visually impaired.
Admission
The school can accommodate a total of 150 children.
Application forms for all classes are available every year from September onwards based on the availability of seats in a particular class.
Two seats are reserved for children with disabilities in case of mid-year admission.
Admission forms should reach the school office latest by mid December.
Eligibility:
Preschool, KG I and KG II – children with visual impairment, loco-motor disability and cerebral palsy (CP) should be between 5-10 years of age (with no schooling experience)
Class I (for all children) – For children without disabilities, the child must be 6 years of age with 2 years schooling experience.
Admission into other classes of special cases will be considered on case by case basis.
The fee structure for new students is as follows:
Admission fee – Rs. 500
Annual fee – Rs. 500
Tuition fee (monthly – Rs. 100 – 250, depending on disability and income of parents)
