Founded on January 13, 2003, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, is a deemed multi-campus, multi-disciplinary research university that is accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ grade. The university is spread across three states of South India in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and is headquartered at Ettimadai, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
Over the years, the university has emerged as one of the fastest growing institutions of higher learning in India and is ranked among the best research universities in India. The university operates under the ages of the Mata Amritanandamayi Math (an international charitable organisation). The university continuously collaborates with the top US universities including the Ivy League universities, and top European universities for regular student exchange programmes.
The university boasts five campuses-
Coimbatore campus: Spread across 400 acres, the Coimbatore campus hosts well planned infrastructure including academic buildings, administration wing, central library, hostels, guest house, staff-quarters, shopping complex, swimming pool and play grounds.
Amritapuri Campus: The Amritapuri Campus is spread over 80 acres and features modern amenities such as workshops, laboratories for different subjects, football ground, badminton and tennis courts, basket ball and volley ball courts and cricket and kabbadi pitches.
Bengaluru Campus: The two schools in Bengaluru campus offer twelve academic programmes: five undergraduate programmes, five graduate programmes, one doctoral programme and one international programme.
Kochi Campus: This is the main campus for Health Sciences. It includes Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, School of Medicine, Centre for Nanosciences, School of Dentistry, School of Nursing & School of Pharmacy), School of Business and School of Arts and Sciences.
Mysuru (Mysore) campus: Spread across 5 acres, the Mysuru campus houses two schools of study which offer Bachelors and Masters programmes including B.Sc. and M.Sc. in several disciplines, B.C.A. and M.C.A, B.B.M., and B.Ed.
The university provides separate accommodation facility for boys and girls.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in Engineering, Business, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Journalism, Biotechnology, Information Technology, Arts and Sciences, Health Sciences, Teacher Education, Microbiology, Hospital Management, Visual Media Studies, Mass Communication, Social Work, Nanosciences and Ayurveda. All the courses of study are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Amrita University is the youngest university to be awarded with an 'A' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous body established in 1994 by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country.
The Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, has listed Amrita among top Indian universities.
